Canoe State – The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, said his daughters would take revenge if their husbands ever slapped them.
Emir Sanusi said he has warned his daughters not to return to him from their marriage with complaints of being beaten unless they have defended themselves.
He said this while addressing the National Dialogue Conference on the Prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) from an Islamic Perspective on Monday, December 9.
As reported by Vanguard, the traditional ruler reaffirmed his stance on domestic violence.
The first-class monarch stressed that any form of domestic violence, including hitting, is explicitly prohibited in Islam.
Sanusi said he did not send his daughters to be abused in marriage by any man.
“Beating your wife, daughter or any other woman is haram (forbidden). Violence against another human being violates his basic dignity. We must teach our daughters not to tolerate it and teach our sons that it is unacceptable.”
The monarch added that:
“If my daughters are ever hit by their husbands, they know I expect them to hit back. I did not send my daughters to be abused. If you hate her, send her back to me, but don’t raise your hand against her.’
Legit.ng previously reported that the Emir of Kano threatened to depose any defending champion found guilty hitting his wife.
The emir made the statement during a speech at the commemoration of the 60th birthday from the Dan Amar of Kano, Professor Suleiman Abubakar.
Sanusi has been one of the leading northern traditional rulers to speak out against violence against women in the northern region.
